I don't homeschool my children in the traditional sense; I use virtual school. It’s like public school but online, allowing them to focus on learning without outside influences, and aligning more closely with my husband's and I's guidance. I, too, enjoy it that way inmensely. They are independent learners being in 5th and 6th grade now. It's been a blessing and I wouldn't change it for anything. I also continue learning so they can model that same behavior as they grow. Reading is our backbone for sure.
Thank you for starting this series! First of all, I love Hannah; second, I'm deeply into research and prayer about how/should/could/can-I-even?!? homeschool. I appreciate this insight!
I resonated so much with this! I really like your schedule. I am new to your Substack (thanks Lisa!) and have been very encouraged. Specifically, the post on waking early—convicting and inspiring, I am pushed (in a good way) to do better.
Reading to my children is my favorite part too! I especially appreciate what you said about homeschool adding layers to your parenting:
"It gives us more connections with each other since we're often reading the same things. But it also adds a layer of difficulty. Instead of just being their mother, I'm also their teacher. But because I am their mother, there's a gap in respect sometimes — on both sides."
I have definitely found this to be true but hadn't articulated it quite this way in my brain, so thank you!
Thank you Hannah and Lisa. Hannah, I especially appreciate your thoughts on creating a culture of learning and building relationships. This is where I focus our homeschool and sometimes I feel judgement from public school teachers in my circle. It’s hard to even have a common language around education with a teacher who is so used to tests, metrics, and short-term relationships. It is always good to hear from other homeschoolers who understand a different way of learning.
I love Kh. Hannah's blog and podcast! She has helped me so much by providing homeschooling, faith and general life recommendations and knowledge. Loved reading this and getting to know Kh. Hannah even more.

So good that you all have found something that works for everyone!

I’m glad this resonated with you! I hadn’t articulated it that way before writing this, so it was very helpful to me as well.

It is definitely a counter-cultural way of educating and can be challenging, but is so worth it!
